Farmers Visit with Sen. Michael Hastings

Farmers from Cook and Sangamon County Farm Bureaus, including Cook CFB Board Member Janet McCabe visited with Senator Michael Hastings,  Members visited Andrews High School in Tinley Park where Sen. Hastings served on the school board prior to joining the Illinois Senate.

Teachers go back to class after Summer Agriculture Institute

Pond Shocking Demo and Workshop

We wanted to pass on information on a program being offered by our friends at Will/South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District which some of our members may find of interest. The Will/South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District is pleased to announce that they will be hosting a Pond Workshop and Shocking demonstration for Will and South Cook County landowners on Monday, September 9th from noon to 3 pm at the farmstead of Burton Barr, 15045 West Arsenal Road in Manhattan. Join us for lunch followed by an informative program featuring Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Fisheries Biologist Rob Miller.  Rob will conduct a pond shocking demonstration as he shares information on pond stocking and maintenance. The program will also have presentations by USDA-Natural Resources Conservation staff who will provide expert advice on siting, constructing and landscaping ponds in Northeastern Illinois.      Registration is required and a $5 fee will cover the cost of lunch. ...

Over 400 Cook County Farm Bureau members enjoyed a beautiful day at Brookfield Zoo at the 7th Annual Member Appreciation picnic.

Farm Bureau Donates to Food Depository

Cook County Farm Bureau recently donated 182 pounds of meat to the Greater Chicagoland Food Depository.  Jim Gutzmer, pictured right delivered four boxes of meat from a hog purchased during the Lake County Fair 4-H animal auction to the depository. 

Urban Summer Farm Camp A Success

Summer fun at “Passport to the Farm Camp” Children from Chicago and surrounding suburbs had their passports stamped as they progressed through 12 learning stations during our first ever summer farm experience.  With 40 attendees between the ages of 7-11 (and some 12 year old  Sr. helpers), campers learned about crops, livestock, nutrition, soil and more while reading books, making crafts and sharing snacks. The camp even included a station on Aquaculture/Hydroponics where students saw how tilapia are used in agriculture (we had goldfish for our snack that day!).  Favorite projects included dirt babies, nutrition bracelets and seed planting/germination.  Each child received a drawstring bag, animal pencils, cow key chains, soy crayons, coloring sheets on all livestock, finished crafts and a bookmark to use with their book, “Seed, Soil, Sun” by Cris Peterson which was given on the last day of camp.  Our thanks to the many volunteer presenters, camp counselors an ...
